Scaffolding Company in Woking | Lunch Atop a Skyscraper – An Outdated Image of Scaffolding Contractors

The scaffolding contractors at Band of Brothers Scaffolding are extremely safety conscious in every aspect of our services. Whether providing domestic or commercial scaffolding, we supply risk assessments and method statements prior to assembly. We also complete regular inspections of our access scaffolding and temporary roof scaffold installations. Our scaffolders are highly respected and we are proud to be a leading scaffolding company in Woking and the surrounding areas.

However, scaffold safety wasn’t always as diligent as it is now. Forms of scaffolding have been used for thousands of years but luckily scaffold systems and safety have come a long way.

Lunch Atop a Skyscraper

You may not know the name, but you will certainly recognise the photo. First appearing in the New York Herald Tribune on 2nd October 1932, ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’ is a famous photograph of 11 men eating lunch whilst sitting across a girder.

At the time ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’ was taken, the men in question were approximately 840ft above Manhattan, surrounded by commercial scaffolding and working on the final floors of the RCA Building (now the GE Building). But did you know the picture is widely believed to be a company advertising stunt? The men are real workers, but their day was spent posing in different positions to promote the new structure.

As for any safety concerns, there were none. It has been quoted that the wages were good for the 250,000 scaffolders, ironworkers and various construction workers who completed the building in 1933, but there wasn’t a hard hat to be found between them.

Modern Safety Standards

A lot has changed since 1932. Our scaffolding company adheres to latest rules and regulations regarding on-site safety for scaffolding erection and use. Nowadays, scaffolding contractors must provide the necessary equipment to ensure scaffolders and workers are safe on-site.

At Band of Brothers Scaffolding, our commercial, domestic and temporary roof scaffolds are provided for clients in Woking and the surrounding areas with all the necessary safety equipment.

The internet is full of similar images to ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’, depicting construction workers on scaffolding and girders hundreds of feet in the air with no safety equipment. Some show workers stretched across narrow steel beams whilst resting, or casually chatting as they traverse wide open spaces. Other publicity stunts taken on scaffolding during the 1930s include dinner with waiting staff, a fencing match and playing golf.

Rest assured, such disregard for health and safety will never be found in our domestic or commercial scaffolding services.
